GUMIL HAWAII Gunglo
Dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano iti Hawaii GUMIL Hawaii was organized on January 16, 1971, by sixteen individuals determined to establish a Writers Association of Hawaii. On that early morning Pacita Cabulera Saludes met with Melchor Agag, Jr., Antonio Cacatian, Graciano Soriano, Rev. Juan Dahilig, Rev. Matias Miguel, Felipe Madarang, Anastacio de Castro, Leo Blanco, Clemente Duclayan, and Baldomiro Camarillo at the KAIM Radio Convention Hall to organize GUMIL Hawaii. Pacita C. Saludes was elected GUMIL Hawaii's first president and has led this writers group until 2005. A new immigrant in 1971, Manang Pacing was one of the first officers of GUMIL Filipinas, a writers group established by prominent writers from the Ilocos region and led by the mayor of Sison, Pangasinan and its first president, Art Padua. Over the past 34 years GUMIL Hawaii has completed the following accomplishments: 1. Published fifteen sets of anthologies. 2. Presented twenty-eight Ilocano dramas or plays to preserve the culture and arts of the Ilocanos. 3. Presented many Ilocana ladies representing Miss and Mrs. GUMIL Hawaii. Almost 300 Ilocana ladies have served GUMIL Hawaii over the years. [Adapted from "History of GUMIL Hawaii" in TAMPIPI, edited by Pacita C. Saludes and Bridido D. Daproza, GUMIL Hawaii (2005), p. 160.] In collaboration with GUMIL Hawaii, eFIL presents the collected works of GUMIL Hawaii in digital form as a service to Iluko readers around the world and as an important resource in interpreting the Filipino experience in Hawaii.
