NEWS & UPDATES October 13, 2024 Lastest addition to our Unheard Voices (Oral History) Project has been uploaded. Two of three interviews of Romel Dela Cruz, a health administrator raised on a Hawaii plantation town, is available for viewing. Melinda Tria Kerkvliet conducted the interviews which details Romel's upbringing and education in rural Hawaii, expanding horizons beyond Hawaii and, eventually, returning home to develop and be the chief administrator of several medical institutions. September 9, 2024 To commemorate the centennial of the 1924 Hanapepe Massacre, FAHSOH partnered with the Hawaii State Archives to digitized government documents related to the incident and labor leader, Pablo Manlapit. An introductory exhibit with links to digital resources is available HERE. June 9, 2024 Three films/videos produced by FAHSOH have been uploaded to YouTube for public viewing. These films include FAHSOH's first production, Gene Kois' Sangang Daan (1981), FAHSOH member Clement Bautista's Hawaii Masters of Eskrima (2018) and FAHSOH member Johnny Verzon's Makibaka: Huwag Matakot (2022). Sangang Daan is a narrative feature film depicting the challenges of a family transitioning from life on a plantation camp. Hawaii Masters of Eskrima is a documentary comprised of oral histories of eskrima masters from Hawaii. Makibaka: Huwag Matakot ('Struggle, Do Not Be Afraid') is a documentary of the struggle by residents of Ota Camp (a plantation camp) to fight eviction and purchase their own homes. All films may be accessed HERE. March 24, 2022 An oral history of Ernest "Ernie" Libarios, Sr., an influential educator and counselor is now available for viewing. The oral history consists of three interviews (conducted by FAHSOH member, Melinda Tria Kerkvliet) and is available HERE. November 8, 2021 Publication of Filipino American Ethnicity, Education and Diaspora in Hawaii (2021) by Jonathan Okamura, a compilation of articles and book chapters on Filipino Americans is available through ScholarSpace link HERE. March 9, 2021 Two more publications of GUMIL Hawaii/Annak ti Kailokuan iti Amerika have been digitized and are available on the GUMIL Hawaii webpage. These additions include the following volumes: Utek Ni Kayumanggi (1980) Dawa (1989) GUMIL Hawaii publications can be viewed and downloaded HERE. October 9, 2020 Two traveling Filipino-American Historical Society of Hawaii exhibits have been converted for online viewing. These exhibits include two exhibits commemorating Filipino American WWI and WWII veterans, including the recognition and awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal. View exhibits HERE.
