Computers

eFIL currently operates from three AMD PCs: one webserver, a backup webserver and one workstations. All are running MS Windows 10.

Web design accomplished using Dreamweaver.

Image capture, depending on scanner used, is done using IrfanView (w/scanner capture software), ArcSoft Photostudio, Canon Canoscan Toolbox, Microtek ScanWizard Pro, LaserSoft Imaging SilverFast Ai, Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400II and the packaged Windows XP scanning software.

Image processing, when needed, is mostly done using Adobe Photoshop Elements and IrfanView.

Scanners

Depending on requirements, availability and setting, the following scanners are used to scan materials on eFIL website: Canon CanoScan LiDE 500F (mobile), Epson Perfection V750 Pro, Microtek Scanmaker 1000XL, or Konica-Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400II (for film and slides).

Other Imaging Equipment

Olympus e-3 and e-1 digital cameras with 50mm macro, 11-22mm zoom lens and Panasonic Lumix G85, LX-3 (for event coverage).

Processing Techniques

Materials that are primarily text are scanned at 300 dpi and saved as TIFF files. As appropriate, text files are resampled to 150 dpi and converted to PDF files for web viewing and/or downloading.

Image files are scanned in full color at 600 dpi or higher, depending on the quality and size of the original image, and saved as TIFF files. In preparing image files for the web, they are converted to JPG format (plus grey-scaled, if monochrome), resampled to 300 dpi and resized to print 8" x 10.5" (max). Most files will generally be converted to PDF format for web viewing and downloading.

PDF files are generally created with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0. Older files used other software and all online PDF files will undergo optimization with Acrobat Pro 9.0.
